What Should You Do While Waiting for Us to Come?
We get to your door quickly to start the cleanup process, but there are still some things you can do in the immediate aftermath of a fire or water damage emergency. The first thing is to ensure your safety. If you aren’t sure whether the site is safe – such as from electrical shock or sewage contamination – then evacuate your home! Our technicians will assess the site for safety when they arrive.
If your home is safe, then you will want to take some steps to minimize further damages. Turn off the water main to prevent further leaking. If you can safely access the electric breaker (never touch the electric breaker while standing on a wet surface!), then you should also shut off electricity for the area of your home which is damaged. Do not unplug appliances which have gotten wet until you have shut off the electricity!
In cases of water damage, be cautious about removing wet items to other areas of the home. You might just spread the water and moisture to uncontaminated areas. You can, however, remove any items which aren’t wet and take them to safety. To protect wet floors from staining, put pieces of cardboard under the feet of furniture. If the floor is wet, you may also put furniture up on blocks so prevent more water from seeping into the furniture.
In cases of fire damage, leave everything put! Close off the affected room (shut doors but open outside windows) so soot doesn’t blow into other areas of your home. Do not go into the affected room at all. You could breath in the acidic soot and smoke, causing serious damage to your health.
